About the Event

Our wonderful WI Craft Club member Sam will be teaching the basics of knitting.

You will need:

Yarn and matching knitting needles

Yarn choice:

Sam recommends worsted/Aran yarn for beginners. Any regular yarn will do, but avoid fluffy fashion yarns. Dark colours make it harder to see your stitches. Also avoid anything super chunky or lace weight.

Needle  choice:

You will need the size stated on the yarn band (5mm for Worsted/Aran).

There are three main types of knitting needles. For this workshop, any will do.

* Straight needles: these used to be the most popular and iconic way of knitting and they are still available everywhere, you can knit larger items flat on them but can be a bit cumbersome.

* Circular needles: these are two smaller needles connected by a plastic or metal cable. You can knit flat or in the round on these so they are more versatile and the shorter needles can be easier to handle.

* Double Pointed Needles (DPNs): these are sets of four or five short needles with points on both ends. They are used to knit small things like socks in the round, but you can use just two of them to knit flat as long as the item is short enough to fit on the needles. You'll be knitting a short distance for this workshop so they’ll be fine if you have them, but wouldn’t suggest buying them as your first knitting needles.

What you will learn:

* how to cast-on

* Knit stitch

* Purl stitch

* Cast-off

This will make a small rectangle. With these skills you can make a full scarf or even blanket (which are ultimately just a bigger rectangle!).

To make more complex items you will also need how to do increases and decreases. There probably won’t be time in this session to cover those but Sam will send round a list of good online recourses to learn more after the session.

For those who already know the basics but have specific questions, come along and Sam will be happy to answer them too (time permitting).
