Craft Club - Printing

Printing might seem like something that you need special equipment for so our member Charlotte is going to show us how we can make simple but lovely prints using things that we have at home. There are lots of different types of printing but we are going to look at monoprinting (making a print using 'mark making') and hapazome (Japanese term meaning 'leaf -dye' which involves hitting flowers with a hammer!) Neither of these need special tools to carve/etch, and once we have printed a monotype then we can develope the image by adding drawing/ painting elements, or adding extra layers with stamps and stencils. Hapazome is also good for if you don't have paint, inks or stains available as we use the pigments within the actual flowers, so find strong colours or interesting shapes and bring fabric/paper and a hammer (preferably rubber!) Please see the below ideas for equipment you might want to get together for the monoprinting. The equipment might seem a bit random but Charlotte's been thinking outside the box for items that you have at home that could work! Just bring what you have and we can discuss ideas on how to use them. Colour • Inks, paints, stains, food colouring, beetroot, tissue paper and water Printing area • Gelli plate, table with taped aluminium foil, plexiglass/perspex or glass (from a photo frame) - you might want a few of these ready so you can try a few different prints! • Tape (to mark out printing area and paper size) Items to add colour • Brayer, small paint roller, paintbrush, sponge Items to remove colour/create marks • Stencils, textile tools, stamps, textured items like doilies/lace/wallpaper, flowers/leaves (flat which an interesting shape), cotton buds, pencils, fork, bubble wrap, candle (wax resist), string, vegetables....anything you can think of! Paper • Any! • You might want thin paper or tissue paper if you want to try Chine Colle (where you glue coloured paper to your white sheet before printing over it) Item to help transfer the print from the printing area to your paper • Barren, wooden spoon, rolling pin, smooth stone, empty bottle, large book If you want to create something to help with your mark making then bring a few of the below items too Items for stamping/creating stamps • Fancy buttons, thick card or corks and craft knife/scissors, glue, cardboard tube (from a lint roller or tin foil as they tend to be stronger than toilet/kitchen roll tubes), empty bottle, craft foam and scissors, glue gun, string Items for stencilling • Pre-made papercut, doily, leaves
